Location! Location! Grand Hotel Panhans

As I'm momentarily incapacitated in the progression of Rex episodes, I thought I'd return to the location stream of posts.

The Grand Hotel Panhans with Semmering Golf Course is the main setting for 'Die Verschwoerung'/'The Conspiracy'. This is indeed the hotel in which Rex watched racey movies and ate chocolate from the bar fridge.

Looks fabulous to me. Forget the golf, I'd be happy to enjoy the beautiful hotel and surroundings. I might skip on the sauna though!

Location! Location! The Gasometers

Updated

The Gasometers of Vienna as featured in Stumme Schreie (Season 2, Episode 1), although I believe they also appear later in the series (yes, they do .... in Todesrennen. Series 3, Episode 1).

You may also have seen them featured in movies such as Bond's The Living Daylights. Oh, and the location for Falco's Jeany Part II, Coming Home, added at the bottom here.

Located in the 11th district, Simmering, formerly used for gas storage, they have now been renovated and modern day use includes apartments and entertainment facilities.

Location! Location! Palais Hotel

Yet another Viennese hotel. This time it's the Palais Hotel, located in the centre of Vienna on the Ringstrasse. Apparently, Room 427 is the setting for some of the action in Der Duft des Todes/The Smell of Death, Series 2, Episode 10.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum as featured in Season 2, Episode 9, Im Zeichen des Satans/The sign of Satan. I'm sure there are no strange cults recruiting new members these days.

Location! Location! Lobau

A beautiful spot and the setting for the action in Ein moerderischer Sommer. The Lobau is a floodplain of the Danube and can be found on the northern side of the Danube in Vienna but extends into Lower Austria. It forms part of the Donau-Auen National Park.

Location! Location! Schoenbrunn

Schoenbrunn Palace. No, it's not an Andre Rieu model.

Hard to imagine a more beautiful building and surrounding parks. Little wonder then that the Palace and grounds feature in so many Rex episodes, either as an integral part of the story or as a backdrop. Schoenbrunn makes its first real appearance in Die Tote von Schoenbrunn/The Body at Schoenbrunn.

Marokkanergasse 8. Original home of Moser. What else is there to say?

Location! Location! Prater

The Prater. Another favourite backdrop to the Rex team, particularly the Riesenrad, on which Rex catches a ride in a later episode (to be detailed later).

First appears in the Rex pilot Endstation Wien in the background as Moser purchases a snack from a Wuerstelstand (tried but couldn't find a photo of the particular one), only to be covered in mustard and have his wallet nicked from his trouser pocket. Still, at least his sausage stayed intact....and I swore there'd be no tasteless sausage jokes on this blog. See? Never trust a Wuerstsemmel.

Location! Location! Hotel Sacher

Hotel Sacher, established by Eduard Sacher, son of the creator of the Original Sacher-Torte, a unique chocolate cake with a thin layer of apricot jam. Hotel Sacher makes its first appearance in the pilot Rex: Endstation Wien, where Frau Werner and the shortly to be bumped off Herr Landovsky have a lunchtime meeting, leaving a starving Stocki clutching a rather stale looking Wurstsemmel (what else?) in the foyer.

Guess who it lists among the prominent guests? Forget John Malkovich, Julie Andrews, Jerry Hall, Bruce Willis.....all us Recycled Rexers care about is our very own Moser, Tobias Moretti, hidden away here on page 2.

Location! Location! Stephansplatz

Stephansplatz. Featured in the Rex pilot: Endstation Wien as the site of the coffee house where a former Russian secret agent is blown up. In fact, if you look closely at the photo above, I think the building on the right is indeed the coffee house building and the restaurant may be Do & Co. Locals feel free to correct me!

Visit at your own risk. Seems like the Sachertorte mit Sahne is rather explosive!



Stephansplatz is also home to the famous Stephansdom, whose beautiful structure dominates the skyline in many a Rex episode but, in particular, forms an excellent backdrop to the action in Endstation Wien.

Of course, as a Brit, I was also amazed to see the ubiquitous Marks and Spencer nestled near Stephansplatz in Mariahilfer Straße (52) and getting some good product placement in Rex: Endstation Wien.
